Over the years we have had the opportunity to help fellow bookkeepers energise their careers and re-discover a long-lost passion. We have also helped bookkeepers, exit the industry, on their terms and with a little cash on the way out.
Get On, Get Back or Get Off … where are you at?
In our experience, at any moment in time, owners of bookkeeping firms sit at one of four stages. They either want to Get On, Get Back, Get Off or they are happy cruising along.
Real Balance, at this point in time, is at a “Get On” stage, we have much to achieve. We understand our core strengths and our vision is clear. However, at other times we have been a “Get Back” business too.
It doesn’t make any difference what stage you are at, what is important is that you are able to identify where you are, how this makes you feel and whether you need to do anything about it. For instance, being a “Get On” type of business but being locked in a “Get Back” state of mind, will, drain your energy and you will lose touch with the passion you had when you started the business. Ultimately, you may become a “Get Off” business. Take a moment to think about where you may be at this point in time.
We have all been here at one time or another. Most likely when we first started the business. At this stage, we are full of energy and just want to get on with growing the business. Sharing your successes with your team makes it all worth it. You get up each morning, ready to confront new challenges and help clients to build better businesses.
This stage requires a lot of energy and can be difficult to maintain over a longer periods. Often business owners will drift between the “Get On” and “Get Back” stages of the business.
Bookkeeping can be a very lonely profession. Bookkeepers are like the marathon runners, we are in for the long haul, tolerant to a little discomfort and enjoy our own company. But many hours spent working alone, can be exhausting. Successes may not be celebrated because there is no one to share the victories. Over time, this can be overwhelming and is often the first step in the journey away from the profession.
At this time, all you want is to get back to what it once felt like to run your business, but worry that you don’t have the energy to do it on your own.
This is often the result of many years spent at the “Get Back” stage. In simple terms, you are cooked, you have nothing more to give. And that is okay.
Bookkeeping is a tough industry. As bookkeepers we know that, our work can be demanding and relentless. Compliance obligations, deadlines, due dates, client demands all create stress that over time can, become overwhelming.
If you think it is time to get off, we can help you make the best decision for you and your family.
